Ten years later, if author will still be writing, we’ll perhaps get something interesting from him. Perhaps.

I already can predict this is gonna be a train-wreck.
Typically when you’d evaluate something you’d judge it for what it brings to the table but this novel is best appreciated for what it isn’t. Because its best qualities is that it does not rely on the standard tropes that define the romance genre and actively subverts them.
The MC isn’t dense, no sideheroines are introduced to divert attention from the main ship nor does it rely on misunderstandings or lack of communication. As someone who dislikes harem/ haremesque elements and retarded MCs it truly feels like it was written with my interests in mind
But as I read it I couldn’t help but feel like the story is rather lacking as much as I would want to enjoy it. So much care and attention is given to the relationship between the MC and the heroine yet I still couldn’t care less about the heroine. It feels like a total waste really because it is. All she is really is a tsundere and nothing more than that making her feel pretty bland. The story might as well be called “Guide to dating a tsundere” because all it really is is a proof or concept that a romance could work between a tsundere and a non-retard MC.
Well it’s not as if I expect deep characters from stories such as these but I’d still have rather had some thing that made her feel less like a cardboard cutout. At least she’s not physically abusive.
The real issue really is that typically the genre throws a bunch of stereotypical characters at you to distract you from how shallow they are individually. But when you strip down the story and make it more focused like here, you’d expect the characters to be given a bit more depth to compensate
There are also some other minor quirks that bother me like having had to make the MC exceptional at reading people for him to not act like a retard. It ain’t just enough to have a brain. Or glossing over the social setting. Typically when a heroine is this attractive, in other novels emphasis is placed on the amount of jealousy the MC would have to deal with when he gets her attention. Or the fact that the heroine is really attractive and has a harsh personality, both things that would make her classmates feel jealous and feel like bullying her. Not saying that she can’t just be isolated as it really depends on the social setting but that is exactly why I would have liked a bit more focus on her position in class as her inadequate social skills are a core issue she has to deal with.
But maybe I’m being a bit too harsh on the novel. Perhaps I’m just too tired of tsunderes so I’m not giving it the credit where credit is due and downplaying her character. But I can’t help feeling this way
