Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai

One day, I – a high schooler – found a paperback in the hospital. The “Disease Coexistence Journal” was its title. It was a diary that my classmate, Sakura Yamauchi, had written in secret. Inside, it was written that due to her pancreatic disease, her days were numbered. And thus, I coincidentally went from Just-a-Classmate to a Secret-Knowing-Classmate. It was as if I were being drawn to her, who was my polar opposite. However, the world presented the girl that was already suffering from an illness with an equally cruel reality…

This is the review I left on Goodreads:

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas

A humble request to Goodreads. Someone, somehow get this message to those who can do something about it. Add the official Seven Seas version of this masterpiece to the index. A lot of people are put off by the foreign language on show. It hurts me so much that someone may decide not to read this book, if only because they don’t figure out that it is in fact a novel. With so many versions and the manga on display, it can get confusing for many users.

But I digress, for good reason though—because this book deserves the case I make for it.

It took me a total or 5 hours to manage to finish this novel (even though the content isn’t that lengthy) because I simply couldn’t manage to bring myself to read till the end… because before the start we know how it ends… but when that end draws near, you don’t want it to. I became… afraid. In these few hours, this novel managed to do so… so much… to me… and for me… It is very difficult for me to explain in words, the impact this book has left on me. It will forever have a place in my heart. It managed to do to me in a few hours’ reading time, what entire 15 novel series haven’t managed to do.

l want to thank the author especially for this. You will probably never write something quite like this again (it’s a once a lifetime kind of work) but know that in some obscure part of the world a [unremarkable-bibliophile]-san found your work, read it, and will never forget it.

I have read masterpieces before, but this is the very first review I have ever left for a book (or anything else for that matter). Why? Because it compelled me to. Because I was looking for some… something… like closure online after reading it, to see if it had impacted others to the degree it had me. I will not use any adjectives to describe this novel, words are simply not special enough.

Perhaps I sound melodramatic, but I speak (err.. write) from the heart. For as long as I live, I will not forget this book. I won’t allow myself to. This is… not exactly a review. It is a outpour of the many feelings this novel induced in me. I simply cannot stress this enough, but I hope that all of us find in our lives, in any form, what I found in reading this novel.
